We were about 25 miles away from Cedar Key on highway 24 at around 5:30 on January 22, 2013 when we started noticing the sky.  As we got closer we could tell that it was going to be an absolutely stunning sunset.

As we watched the sky my main thought was that I hoped we would make it to bridge 4 in time to see it at its peak…  Unfortunately, we missed it by about 20 minutes.

When we finally arrived at the edge of bridge four I pulled over and grabbed what I could of the fading sunset.

Cedar Key Sunset over the Bayou

At its maximum brightness the entire western sky looked as if it was on fire.    I could only image what it looked like over the quiet gulf water…  As many sunsets as we’ve seen here in Cedar Key, this was definitely one of the most spectacular.
