A collection of beautiful scenic images around the town of Cedar Key, Florida

Oh, what a beautiful day…

Another absolutely fantastically beautiful day!  Whoever is in charge of the weather for Cedar Key this year is doing a great job.  Here are some evening shots of the day…

Cedar Key Sunset 022213-1

Waiting patiently for dinner.   Which one is going to eat fish this evening?

Notice the lack of a horizon?   Quite often the water is so calm in the gulf around Cedar Key that you literally cannot distinguish the horizon.  While taking these pictures I had a fellow come up to me and say,  “Look at that!  You can’t see the horizon…”    If you visit Cedar Key you will likely notice this effect some evening.

The moon rises over the Cedar Key pier.

Taking in the sunset.

The Cedar Key pier offers great, wide-open views of the sunset.

A view of Dock Street at dusk.

Many people who visit Cedar Key may think that Dock Street and Second Street are “Cedar Key”.    While those streets represent the primary commercial aspects of the town, with a little time you will discover that there is much more to Cedar Key.

A visit to Rainbow Springs State Park

We decided to visit Rainbow Springs State Park near Dunnellen today.    Rainbow Springs is Florida’s fourth largest spring and, from the 1930s through the 1970s, was the site of a popular, privately-owned attraction.  The Rainbow River is popular for swimming, snorkeling, canoeing, and kayaking. Canoes and kayaks can be rented at the headsprings.

Being our first time there we weren’t sure what to expect.   We found it to be a very beautiful park.   Admission is $2.00 and you can easily see everything in a couple of hours.   Here are a few shots that I took while there…

A boat ride to the Suwannee River

Having just taken the boat tour to the lighthouse on Seahorse Key yesterday, I decided to take the Suwannee River boat tour with Tidewater Tours today.   On this particular day our boat was captained by a lady who has lived in Cedar Key her entire life.

As she navigated the back waters on the way there and back, it was obvious that she knows these waters like the back of her hand.   At times we were winding though shallow water at full speed with reefs only feet away from us on both sides of the boat.   A fun ride!

Here are a few shots from this tour.

In this case I had strong back-lighting so I made this shot of a dead tree on the Suwannee River into a silhouette

A very comfortable and enjoyable tour!    Tidewater Tours has several tours to choose from.   Because of the length of the tour, the Suwannee River tour happens only occasionally so be sure and check with them for a possible date.    There are a number of other tour and charter operations on the Island.    See my Cedar Key Resource Guide for more information.

Cedar Keys Lighthouse

Today I took the boat ride over to the open house at the Seahorse Key lighthouse.    It was an absolutely beautiful day and the trip was very enjoyable.  Seahorse Key is being leased to the University of Florida and is therefore off-limits most of the time.  On a few rare occasions it is open to the public, today being one of those days.

The people at Tidewater Tours told me that today was probably one of the busiest open house days they have seen.   From mid-morning until about 4:30pm several of the local boat tour companies shuttled people back and forth to Seahorse Key.   Once on the Key the University provided numerous educational seminars.

Scenic Cedar Key

An absolutely beautifully gorgeous day!!   Whoever was in charge of the weather today got it just right!

A scenic shot of the Cedar Key beachIt was one of those days that the sky was so bright and the water so calm you could hardly distinguish where the ocean quit and the sky began on the horizon…

A scenic shot along G Street in Cedar Key FloridaAnd a beautiful sunset to finish the day off!   This last shot, which is one of my favorites to date, happened entirely by accident.   My wife and I were riding our bikes along G Street when I noticed this scene in an unlikely place.  I hit the brakes and told my wife I had to go back and get a shot.   It’s one of those shots that was completely unplanned, but everything came together for a great image.

A Stunning Sunset

We were about 25 miles away from Cedar Key on highway 24 at around 5:30 on January 22, 2013 when we started noticing the sky.  As we got closer we could tell that it was going to be an absolutely stunning sunset.

As we watched the sky my main thought was that I hoped we would make it to bridge 4 in time to see it at its peak…  Unfortunately, we missed it by about 20 minutes.

When we finally arrived at the edge of bridge four I pulled over and grabbed what I could of the fading sunset.

Cedar Key Sunset over the Bayou

At its maximum brightness the entire western sky looked as if it was on fire.    I could only image what it looked like over the quiet gulf water…  As many sunsets as we’ve seen here in Cedar Key, this was definitely one of the most spectacular.

Cedar Key Sunset over the bayou-2These shots show maybe 10 percent of what the sunset looked like just a few minutes earlier.   What an amazing sight!
